Pre-high school: I ran a lot of local 5ks and a few half marathons.  I didn't do a ton of training, but I just had fun, and I got more serious about it as high school got closer.

High school: I enjoyed running a lot, especially cross country.  I originally did track to keep my in shape for cross country.  I ran at Footlocker Nationals, the Adidas Dream mile, Brooks PR Invitational, world xc junior championships, and a few local 5ks.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Make sure I have fun, not get burned out, and get faster.

School records in the 5km and 10km.

Personal:

Served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from July 2015-July 2017.  I gained 30 lbs. during the service and came back out of shape; however I knew that if the Lord wanted me to once again run competitively, he would bless me to return to fitness.

I graduated from Sky View High School in Smithfield, Utah. I currently run for Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

I went to Montana with some friends and just ran on a treadmill there. Not as far as I would like, but it was pretty fast, so it's okay, right?

Just ran inside of Sky View, because of the weather. I watched a basketball game while running. after I ran 3 miles I did a half mile for cool down.

It looked sunny outside, but I didn't want to be fooled, so when I went outside to go running I was expecting a cooled breeze of air to hit my face as I opened the door. It turned out that instead I felt the nice heat of the sun instead. I went back inside and took off gloves, hat, and running tites. It was actually just a really good run, with no complaints. Really liked the canyon, tried to run to a car (which happened from 20 yards away) and then TRIED to stay with it (that only happened for 50 yards, til I got tired of sprinting my butt off and realized I had 2 miles left to run). Just had a good time. Not too cold and not too hot.

Conner Mantz.

I  ran 4 slow treacherous miles. I felt terrible the whole time. My stomach hurt sooo much. I had a banana 30 min. before and it ruined my whole run. I felt like stopping at 2 and a half miles, but then I just went slower so I could say that I didn't stop the whole time even though I felt like crap.

I was a little mad about not being able to run on thursday (due to soccer practice/guitar/homework. At soccer I ran my butt off to mainly to help) so today when I didn't feel 100% I still ran as hard as I could without pushing it too hard. It was a good run up smithfield canyon. I felt pretty good except for my calfs felt a little hurt. Hopefully in a week I can run better than I did today, because next week is my first race of the year. I'm really excited.

Ran up the canyon, was going to only go 4 but hey, 5 is better. Guessing on my time from my running playlist is it was 1 or 2 min under 30 min. So it was under 6 min miles.

I ran the Shamrock in Smithfied today. Way nice. Just had a good time the whole race. Enjoyed music. Had good time. My music was kinda louder than I wanted it. The race (if you haven't ran it before) had an uphill at first, then some downhill. It was the best race, for me,  of this year so far, but that might be because of it being the only race so far this year for me. After they had a huge drawing, which I always love. If you haven't run this race before then I most definatly recommend this to you. After the race I ate some McDonalds, which was pretty yummy, but after I started regretting it. Oh well.

5 miles - Smithfield canyon. Rainy. wore a shirt that was a bit too big, and when it got soaked after the 1st mile it felt like it was makeing me go a lot slower. Wanted to take it off, but is was cold so I didn't. At the start of mile 4 my knee started hurting for about 2 or 3 hundred meters. Felt best, surprisingly, at the end of it. That never ever happens for me.

Ran 5 miles -- Smithfield Canyon. Ran 1 mile for partly downhill and tried to get a new PR for a mile. Did it, but it was only by a second. Then after that took a half minute or minute breather, then finished my run at probably a 6 minute or a 6:10 pace. felt good, but kinda pushed it more than I should have before the race on Saturday.

Nice run up the canyon. averaged around 6 min to 6 min 10 sec. min. miles. At the turn around I saw the candy on the table. I was kinda tempted to grab some, but I knew it would only make the race worse. Later on the last 3.2 I think I averaged around a 5:30. Saw a lot of people I knew who were running it after the turn around. Saw a lot of people I knew after the race also. Steve Anderson pushed me. I kept thinking he might be getting closer, so I would try running faster.

Ran up Smithfield Canyon. First long(er than 6.2 miles) for the training for Utah Valley half Marathon. Only 3 weeks.

Went to Montana/Yellowstone for a school trip.  Didn't want to miss a day of running, especially when the utah valley half marathon being in less than 3 weeks.  Ran at night for 30 min., which I guess if my pace was 6 min. miles or shorter(which it felt like it was) that I would run 5 miles.  Took a while for the teachers to let me run outside by myself, but at 8:20 they let me. It was a good run in a really small town, which I might add had probably a thousand asain tourists, where I had my friends cheering me when they saw me running. It was pretty fun.

Just ran 5 miles up Smithfield Canyon.  Didn't want to at first, but it felt good.

Total Distance

Had to get a longer run in before Utah Valley.  Just two weeks until it, and I'm started to get excited.  Averaged 6:10 going up Smithfield Canyon, and around 5:45 on the way down.  Overall averaged 5:57.  Had a good run down, didn't feel that good the first mile.  I'm surprised about my last mile I got 6 minutes while gaining a lot of elevation. I usually run that mile in 6:30 on 5 mile runs, so I felt pretty good and pushed it pretty hard.  I think I saw Paul Peterson somewhere up the canyon while running.

Total Distance
5.00

Didn't feel that good during it, but happy I went.  It started hailing around my turn around point and for a few minutes the hail hurt.  Rained a lot.  It was pretty cold.  I'm happy now that the Utah Valley is coming up.  I'm so excited.

I think it was 5.  It was a XC thing that was kinda challanging.  We ran at 6 in the morning and went up this road, which had a very big up hill, and then we went back down to the school.  After Mr. Storrs gave us some donughts and orange juice, which made the run worth the uphill.

Total Distance

I usually don't run on a Friday, but I had forgotten to run yesterday and I wanted to hang out with friends, so instead I ran my long run today and am maybe going to run tomorrow for my Thursday run.

I ran up Smithfield Canyon all the way until I saw the road gate that stopped me. I was only planning on 10 a few days ago, but yesterday I thought I should do 11.  I pushed the run harder than I usually would have pushed a run like this.  I ran up the canyon in around a 6:06 pace, and I averaged (over the whole course of there and back)  a 5:55 pace.  I used my Dad's garmin to see the pace.

I saw a lot of people there that agreed with me that it was great weather, because they were running outside too.  Now that I'm finished with it I will probably start tapering for Utah-Valley Half Marathon in a week and a day.

Total Distance

It felt good to run, but it was very hot even if it was in the morning.  At the middle of the day it was 89 degrees in the shade.

The race started in Blacksmith Fork Canyon, and ended in Hyrum. My dad drove me and Greg Law up at about 6 or something.

Last night I had a sore throat that hurt and so I did what I could to end the sore throat, drink tons of water.  Before the race I started to regret it. I had to go to the restroom every 5 minutes or less, but anyway onto better stuff to talk about.

I got to meet and talk to a lot of runners.  My first few miles were at the pace I wanted.  There was someone who came up to me around mile 3. I talked to him and luckily for me he didn't sign up for the race - he later told me he ran for Weber State and bandit ran it. He passed me in between 6 and 7, which is when I started to slow down and started going slower than I wanted to.

At around mile 7.5 there was an aid station where I stopped running for the first time in a race to get a drink.  I was a little dehidrated. I then just ran it from there trying to push it.  I looked back to see Jeryl (sorry, I can't spell names) getting closer, so I tried for the last mile to push it, but for some reason I didn't feel like I could.  After, talked to Jeryl for a bit.  I talked to a bunch of new people, and ones I'd already known from past races, which was pretty fun.  I talked to Jason who was a friend I'd just made that week at EFY who was wearing a red, white, and blue mowhawk wig, which he told me later made him really sweaty, especially at the first mile.  Nice run.  I recommend the course to anyone who is wondering if they should run it.

It was a great morning to be running a race.  They had the half marathon start 15 minutes before us.

I was hoping for a personal best this race, but I wasn't really prepared for parts of it.  I started off slower then I wanted to. I was running about 40 yards behind 2 people.  I thought they were both running the 5k, so for my first mile (which is probably the reason I went slow) I didn't have a need to go way fast.  Sadly, the one ahead of the 2 guys didn't turn for the 5k turn and kept going.  I tried going faster at that point.

Later I ran on the same street as the 5k and half-marathon runners, which made me feel like I was flying when I passed them, but I was going just my regular pace.  I tried to keep in eyesight of the guy ahead of me that was running the 10k. I lost sight of him after the second or third mile. At the 4th mile or so I went onto the Lagoon trail.  I went way slower on the trail then I hoped, which is probably the reason I didn't get a PR, mostly because it turned a lot and was bumpy.

After I ran up a hill, and for the last third of a mile sprinted down a hill to the finish.  I still am happy about my time, I just wish I could have gotten a PR, but oh well, maybe another day.

When it started I felt pretty good, and ran a little behind Paul for the first half mile, and ran with another guy, who was next to me at the start, for the rest of the run.  I started slowing down when the race started going up 6th south, and then the guy I was running with (I later found out his name was Jacoby) staretd going ahead of me by a bit, so I just pushed it up the hill.  I knew that after it there was a pretty nice downhill.  At the top of the hill there was my older brother and a bunch of Youth Council members handing out water and gatorade, which felt good, but I didn't really need it much like I do on other runs.

After that we run down hillside and I saw my mom doing my paper route. I tried to say thanks, but I wasn't sure she heard me. As soon as we turned onto Summit (Starting mile 5) I saw my neighbor taking pictures.  I tried to say something to him but my mouth had some saliva in it that I couldn't even understand what I was saying and just stopped talking.  We kept going down Summit, down the golf course hill, which I tried to go really fast down, and then started up the canyon.

I had talked to Jacoby about how this would be the worst part of it, and when it started I think I was ready for it. The first mile up the canyon went great. Same with the second. Same with the third, they were all faster than I was hoping to get.  After another half mile we turned around.  Jacoby and I went down the canyon way fast.  A little after mile 10 he told me that we should try to get a 17 minute 30 second or something like that for the last 5k. I said he probably could, I was getting pretty tired, and I wasn't sure if I could keep up the pace.  He kept incouraging me to keep going at the pace and our first mile of the last 5k was 5:10.  I then felt like stopping, but he kept incouraging me.

Our next two miles were kinda fast too.  I don't know about the time of them, but I tried to get pretty fast. I think I got ahead of Jacoby for the last quarter mile or something like that. After I finished I was surprised at my time.

If anyone should want to run this race, I definately recommend it. It is a pretty nice race. There were some people that it was there first half marathon. My Dad did great in it. My sister also did great. It was her first half. I later talked to a ton of people after the race.  Paul told me he thought it might be 400 meters short. I talked to Russel Olsen and his brothers, who ran the 5k. His younger brother took 1st in it, his older took 2nd and Russel took 3rd, which I thought was pretty cool. Their sister took first in the womans in it too.

XC- Ran with Tyson and Matt.  Went through a stream and my feet were wet and cold, but still was a good run. We went slow for part of it, and did some sprints in it. After did some core workouts that nearly killed me. I had to take small brakes in the middle of most of them, but I did better than the last time I did core workouts, so I felt okay about them.

XC- Went the whole time with Nick and coach. The first mile was a little slow, the next three were pretty fast, the last 4 were medium or something like that.

Went to BYU XC camp for 4 days. We did a threshold run which was 2.5 miles.  I did a small cooldown after.

Total Distance

Did 4 miles in the mourning. 3.6 were with the camp, then I did a .4 cool down, which I didn't like how it went, but it was pretty good.  Later did some fartleks in the afternoon.  It was pretty hot at first.  Did 4, 3, 2, 1.  Ran around 4 miles including cool down.  Maybe a bit more.

Total Distance

Ran 4 in the morning again.  In the afternoon ran on a hiking trail to a waterfall by Aspens Grove (or something like that).  It was 2 miles up and then went under the waterfall. The water was soo cold. Some people said it was probably 50 degrees. Later we ran 2 miles down. The trail was a very hard trail due to the rocks and roots that I tripped on, but it was fun.

Total Distance

Did a 2 mile race. It was pretty fun. At first I was in the back and got crowded in.  After a bit I ran around a bunch of people to get more towards the front.  I was a little behind Tyler Roberts (who also went to the camp). We ran through some soccer fields, baseball fields, and then ran to the track. After 300m on the track we had run a mile. Right before the track I passed Tyler and some other guy whose name escapes me. One guy was in front of me, and then at the end of the first mile, Eric passed me.  The first mile was at 5:03 or something.

The next mile didn't have much happen after that, or at least for me. The two guys in front of me battled it out and were pretty far ahead of me, maybe by 200m. At the end I didn't feel like I could sprint, but I tried. I don't think I did go much faster, but oh well. No one passed me at the end but some were pretty close. I barely stayed in front of them at the end. Another person on my team named Chase (AKA Georgia) was 2 people behind me. My time was a 10:47, which I was happy about because it was in the heat and all. After Tyler and I did a half mile cool down.  Tyler was one of the people who almost passed me at the end, and he helped his team out a bunch. They took first place, which I thought was pretty cool. It was way fun to run that little race.  They called Tyler an "unidentified runner" early on in the race when he was fighting for first. He later told me he didn't want to start out fast, but he didn't want to get caught into the group and go slower. Overall it was awesome.

XC- Ran with the team for the first time in a week. I think I was laughing for over half the time at the jokes Nick, Matt, and Steve were saying. At the last mile they started going a lot faster. It felt good to run at home again. After running we did this excercise jumping over people, and I'm afraid I hit a few people. :-)

XC- There were a few inches of rain on the road, so that was kinda a hint that we weren't going to run for a bit.  We played tag inside a gym for a while, which I'm counting as 1.5 miles.  After a while when we thought the rain was done and we ran. after about 2 or 3 minutes it started raining hard again. I ran with Dylan and he pushed me a ton.

Total Distance

XC-This was probably the hardest run I've done with the team.  We first jogged to Mack Park, which wasn't bad one bit.  After Coach Wright explained to us the run.  We sprinted up Beauty, went slow down Beast, Sprinted up Beast went down Beauty. The first time we did that it was not that hard, but after that, It was terrible.  The beast is a long hill, and the beauty is a smaller hill.  We did that 5 times then jogged back to SV.  I was thinking about running twice today, but after Beast, I didn't want to.

XC- I'm just guessing on the distance. We ran to Mack Park and then started a tempo run. Went up the canyon after that. Hard to explain where it went.  Was a pretty hard run for the tempo run, but going down the canyon and back to SV felt good.

XC- I'm guessing on the distance again. We did a new type of run that I hadn't done before.  The hardest part was the sprinting up a hill.  Almost caught up the Matt 2 or 3 times going up the hill, but died at the last of the sprint.  It was a hard run though.

XC- Coach Wright told a few people who had been running a ton this summer to take this week easy, or to not run at all.  He said that because he doesn't want us to burnout or to get sick of running right before state or during the season sometime.  So this week I'm going to take easy.  Coach Wright said he wants us to, after this week, want to run sooo much.

Ran a pretty hard tempo run. I didn't want to go slow. Ran it in 18 minutes, felt pretty good, and wanted to run more after.

XC- Did a warm up, then we had a blue and white run/race. This was for Varsity and JV for our meet on Friday I think.  I got 17:14 or 17:40, (I didn't hear it that well) for the 5k. Did a cool down after. Almost got lost a few times, if it wasn't for Nick, Tyler, and the other guys on the team, for sure I would've gotten lost.

Total Distance

XC- Golf course extended run. First we did a warm up, up sixth south. I went with Alex for the warm up, then ran with Steve, Tyler, Nick, and Jared for the rest of the run.  Then we did 5 minutes miracles after the warm up, which were 3 minutes tempo, 1 minute race pace, and 1 minute plus, then repeat.  It was pretty hard, but it felt good.

Total Distance

XC- We are now training everyday together, and school starts tomorrow, so my runs are going to be different.  Today we ran at 3PM, which wasn't much fun.  We did some accelerations, or ateast that's what I think they were called. It sucked running in the heat, but it probably helped me.  After 3 and a half miles Tyler and Jared jumped in the creek we were running by.  It was pretty funny, and I was thinking about doing it. Talked a lot about XC after.  Got a meet on Friday, so I'm excited.

Total Distance

XC- today we got our jerseys for the team. Then ran a slow pre-meet run.  I ran it with Tanner at first, then later with Brennan and a few other kids.  Didn't want to go fast, so went a slower pace, stopped a few times to get a drink, because it was way hot.

XC Meet- It was a long ride there, but it was fun. When we got there the JV girls ran 30 min. later.  Then the JV guys ran, then the Varsity girls, and then the varsity guys. We ran at 5:30, which kinda sucked because it was still burning outside-100 degrees!  It was so hot that we were sweating before we were running.  I tried to drink a ton before the race because I'm not used to running in the heat.

At the start I didn't want to get trapped so I sprinted at the first, and went way too fast.  After about the first half mile or a bit more I was already way dehydrated.  We went down a hill and a few people passed me, I tried to pace myself for the that part. I ran with them for a bit and then went up a hill and was behind them a bit.  I was too dehydrated, I didn't want to keep running.  At that part I hated running a ton.  There was a group ahead of me with about 3 or 4 people, and one guy pretty far ahead of them.  We kept running the rest of the race, which I was hoping would be over soon, but we still had 2 miles left.  We ran around the pond once, and a while after that someone passed me, and I passed someone else a little after the 2nd mile.  I kept running, and the people that were ahead of me I knew I couldn't beat at the last second.  We didn't really have a big fast sprint at the end.  The people that were ahead of me were only ahead by a few seconds, but the whole race I knew I woudn't catch them at the end, even though I tried to think it at some times.  I crossed at 16:01 for the 3 miles course.  I almost fell over at the end.  Some guy made sure I was okay, then went and helped a guy that was behind me a bit.

I saw my grandma and grandpa after, which was cool I thought.  Dylan came in 30 seconds after me, and talked to me a bit.  After I drank probably a full gallon of water.   Our team took 2nd out of a lot of the teams that were there, which was way cool.  I did a cool down with a few of the other guys on the team after, then we drove home. XC is a ton of fun!

Way to go Connor! Sounds like a typical XC race... go out way too fast and then try to hang on! Tough running in the heat at 530... it will be a lot nicer when the weather starts cooling off. You are going to have a great season!!!

nice debut XC race Connor, without that heat you would have wiped all those guys out. they had the advantage since it is hotter in utah valley than cache valley so they are used to it. wait til they come to your home turf. then you will wipe them out. keep up the great work. are you running varsity already as a freshman?

Did half a mile warm up, then we started the run.  It was still pretty hot - 90 degrees.

At first I kinda got stuck in the crowd, but went around some Bonneville guys and went to the lead with Dylan and 2 bonneville people behind me. It was a figure 8 twice. The first part was good, everyone was pretty close behind me.

After the second part of the figure 8 I pulled ahead of everyone. At the first part of the second figure 8 I didn't see Dylan or one of the Bonneville people anymore. I was getting scared of the guy behind me so I tried speeding up. At the second part of the figure 8 it is mostly sand.  Coach Storrs or Coach Wright told me that I had 10 seconds on the guy behind me, which helped me out a ton, maybe only mentally, and helped me get back into my rythym.

At the end I thought it ended about 100 meters after I thought it was going to, but I still had a kick after that. After two Bonneville guys crossed, and then Dylan and Tyler. The guys and girls both won (YEAH!). It was a bit close though for the guys, we won by 3 points. Everyone did really well. Nice job Sky View.

We did a long run in the morning.  Ran with Alex a bit faster and a bit less distance that I wanted, but we had to hurry to make the bus to school.  Alex and I kept speeding up a lot during the run.  We started increasing our speed every once in a while.  It was a nice tempo run.

We did some stretching, got ready for the race, watched the girls start.  The MC girls won, I think, but our team still did great.

When we started I didn't want to get trapped like last week so I went out pretty hard at the first.  Tyler and a few other guys gave me some tips before the meet, which helped me out.  I got about 10 seconds ahead of Tyler and Dylan over the first mile, but they stayed the same distance the whole race.  I liked the course, a lot more than Bonneville, and they had a gator ahead of us to keep us from getting lost.

I didn't feel I pushed a ton, but more of just enough to keep me feeling good and keep me going fast.  At the finish I went hard and pushed it with the energy I still had.  I thought Tyler or maybe Dylan would pass me at the end, but I had a good last 400 m which went really well, so they may have gained time on me, but hey, they are on my team.  Everyone did really great not just SV, but also MC. I saw a bunch of people I had met before that ran for MC.  We won, by a good ways, but the MC team put in some good runs also.

The temperature was a little cooler - 82 degrees.

First sorry-this was on Friday, September 16. I put it on the wrong day.

When we got there we had about 2 hours til the boys varsity race started, and that was a pretty long time. Tyler and Dylan showed me the course and gave me some really good pointers for it.  It was pretty good weather for the first 4 races, but at the boys JV it started raining pretty bad.  At ours it was worse.

I was told that they had a bunch of false starts, which I was a little scared of, but I think they only had one with the girls Varsity race.  We started running and I had a pretty good spot at the first part, then I kept sprinting to what I thought was the distance we sprinted for the distance that we sprinted on for the practice on Wednesday.  I went around a bunch of people to do that.  I went and settled into my pace, and I was in first.

We went up a small hill and the JV boys we finishing their race at this part, and so we had to get around them.  After the small hill there was a small downhill and a few guys passed me.  Then we went up another hill and I got up to the front.  When we went downhill after that and that's when people passed me and I didn't pass them after that.  I ran with them and we got to a muddy trail and it was really hard to run on.  We kept going on it and the top 5 guys all slipped and fell on a turn.  I learned from their mistake and I slowed it down on that turn and went right behind them up the hill that wasn't big or small.  Everyone was slipping there.  People grabbed on to the other people, branches, the ground.  It was a really steep hill.  I think around 10 to 20 people passed me going up that hill, including a team-mate, Dylan.  After it I started catching up to the guys ahead of me. I had lost a lot of time.  I was a small ways behind them, but now that it was level ground I wasn't slipping.

I ran around the football field and an area like that.  A lot of people were cheering on the kid behind me around the football field. His name was Alex and I heard it a ton. After the football field we were going down a hill that was gravel.  Someone and I passed a guy going down the hill.  We crossed a road, and there was a guy who I'd seen a few times cheering on Sky View who said I was 11th.  I wanted a top ten position.  I passed two or three guys and went around the totem pool sculpture that Tyler and Dylan told me about.  I might have passed a guy after that.  I kept going after I crossed the road again.

There was one guy right behind me.  Around the last 400M we both started pushing it.  He got ahead of me by a second or 2 or 3.  At the last 100M stretch I thought if I pass him that could be the determining of a whole place for my team.  I got on my toes and at the last 10 or 15 meters I passed him (his name was Alex, the one who had people yelling his name the whole time telling him to catch me).  I was so happy. According to runner card I beat him by .4 seconds.  Tyler took 20th and Dylan took 21st, then Steven, Nick, Tyson, and Matt.  Our team did pretty great.  We thought we took 4th, but runner card says we tied for 3rd. Nice job SVXC

First off, I actually got DQ.  Besides for that, my team would have won.  I'll explain why at the end.

Our team got up early and met at SV at 6:15.  When we got to the meet, we walked part of the course, cheered for the JV girls.  We had a while before our race started.  We talked, cheered everyone on, and got ready for the race. The races were a bit different then other XC meets.  They went  1. JV girls  2.  JV guys  3.  7th varsity boys  4. 7th varsity girls  5. 6th varsity guys  6. 6th varsity girls. ect...  The JV guys won the meet, and we had a lot of good finishes.  Then the varsity started.  Everyone on our guys team took 1st or 2nd.  We were killing some of the teams.  Bingham was our biggest worry from what I heard.  I warmed up with Tyler.

We got up to the race line and some, whose jersey said Vikings, forgot his bib.  They let him get it, which was the right thing to do.  We started pretty good.  The viking guy and a Bingham guy were with me the whole time.  They both passed me at one part.  We kept running for the course.  At one part I noticed one of them go out of bounds a little, and I was thinking, in kind of a mean way and he was ahead of me, that I could say he stepped out of bounds by a ways.  Then I thought that would be a stupid way to do good, and kept running.  Sometimes I passed them, sometimes they passed me.  Right before the second mile mark I passed them, and stayed ahead of them.  A lot of my team kept cheering me on.  I told Tyler and Brennan I was dead, but I kept pushing it.  I had about 10 seconds on the other guys.  I went at the last turn, where a lady was pointing to go.  I then sprinted toward the finish pushing all I had.  I got there a little over my goal time, but still got a good time.  Then the guy behind me (stupid Bingham guy) kept saying, "he cut the course, he cut the course" and I had no idea what he was talking about so I ignored it.  My team kept congratulating me and I felt way good.  Later when I was way happy and we were leaving to where the rest of the team was,  the officials called my coach over.  He came back and told me that three coaches "verified" that I had cut the course, and I had been disqualified.  Where the lady pointed on the last turn had been a wrong turn by about five to ten feet.  I am really bummed about that.  The vikings guy came up to me right before coach told me they disqualified me, and said that it doesn't matter if I cut the course because I was sooo far ahead of them it wouldn't make a difference and he thought it was stupid.  I am still pretty bummed about it, but oh well, you can't change the past.  I just needed to beat the Bingham guy or be right behind him for the team to win.  Soo close.

Great job! That's a bummer about the DQ though. That was our region course in high school and my freshman year the top 2 girls accidentally cut part of the course so they had to retrace their steps to get back on.

It figures it would be a miner that would get you DQ They like doing stuff like that. but congrats on the race. dont worry about it. Bingham is... Bingham and if you were wondering vikings are either PG or viewmont but really good job

Sucks that it turned out that way at the end (no fault of your own!), but otherwise you ran an awesome race. Sounds like it was quite a back and forth battle. You are running great, keep it up!

you got robbed in this one but it was good to see you rebound so well at the last meet. The newspaper now calls you "the freshman phenom". keep up the great work. I guess we won't be able to run any road races together until x-country season ends.

Thanks. I tried to bounce back from it. I'll see you soon at the next road race probably.

Did our warm up.  Got ready for the race.  I knew my competition was Jerrel Mock, who I have ran with many many times before, and I was ready for it.  I got a good start.  Jerrel didn't know the course, so he was just going to follow me for most of the way.  After the first 800 M I slowed down and was going to stay behind Jerrel and let him keep the pace.  He slowed down too.  I had forgotten he was following me.  We then sped up and started going again.  I had a slower first mile then I wanted, but we kept going.  I tried to lost Jerrel early so he couldn't outsprint me at the end.I lost him about a half mile or more out.  After that he slowed down.  Sky View won by far.  Can't wait for region.

Did a warm up.  Was way nervous and I think I might have been getting a little cocky/ a little psyched out.  I knew I needed to stay with Hendrickson again.  He took the first mile easy, so Jerrel and I sped up and led the first mile.  Then Adam passed us.  I started catching him and was almost to where he was.  Then Jerrel passed me without me expecting it.  I stayed ahead of the other people, but I never really caught up to Jerrel and Adam.  Adam won, and Jerrel took second.  I don't know what I did wrong that race, maybe I wasn't feeling so good.  Oh well atleast there is state.  Our team took 2nd by 2 points.  We were soo close.  Tyler finished after me and ran a great race.  Out team did pretty good.

Sorry I haven't blogged in a while.  When I got to the meet I was hydrated and ready to go.  The coaches gave us breakfast,  we got to skip school, and we had some snacks.  Everything was going pretty great for me, I don't know how it was going for my team-mates though. We watched the girls meet before we got ready and started warming up.  We had a few hours to kill before the meet which were spent talking and watching the other meets.  We did a warm up and stretched.  I felt fantastic.

The gun went bang, and we were off.  I kinda got boxed in at the first.  I slowed down a bit because the person ahead of me slowed down and I was pushed to the outside on the first turn.  That's when I saw Hendrickson (the runner my coaches had advised me to stay with for the meet until the end) and he was up there leading everyone.  I caught up on the turn and ran with him in my front.  It was still pretty packed.  There was Adam Hendrickson and a guy from Timpanogus ahead of me.  I was in the best spot.  After a while Jerrel came.  We kept running and got more and more spread out from the pack.  I was thinking if I could just stay with these guys I would be great and could get a spot in the top 5 for sure.  For a little ways a guy from Mountain View, who cut me off and made me lose some speed, came in. We were about a mile into the race.  Then nothing really changed.  We kept running hard.  At the last mile everyone sped it up and we lost the guy from Mountain View.  We lost Jerrel, but then he came back.  Then we went around the pond for the second time.  I didn't know how long I could stay with these guys.  I knew it was state and I had to give it my all, so that's what I did.  After a while the Timpanogus guy was a few seconds ahead of us, with Jerrel behind him.  I just left Adam and tried to catch up to them.  There was 600 M left.  I kept putting it out, know this was the time to push it all.  At the road I started sprinting, and passed Jerrel.  I thought, "YES, maybe I can get in the top 2!" and then thought maybe I can win it!  I started running faster and faster giving it my all.  I saw Jerrel's shadow to the right of me.  He was getting closer.  I almost caught the Timpinogus guy, but he beat me by a half second, while Jerrel was behind me by .3 seconds.  Adam came in ten seconds later.  Later the Sky View guys started coming in, all having slower times then usual.  I later found out that they had gotten boxed in in the first part.  Our team took 4th in 4a and we took 5th Overall.  I was happy about my race personally, and happy that I can say that I gave it my all. Jerrel did great also.  He scared me enough at the end to get closer to the winner. It was a good race and season, and I'm sad it is over.  Time to start training for half marathons again.

Congrats! Great race! 2nd place as a freshman is quite an accomplishment and only 1/2 second from first. Nice article in the Herold Journal too.

so you can run road races with us again now that x-country is done? are you and your dad doing first dam run?

Yeah, and I'll probably do the first dam run, I don't know if my dad will. He's been a bit injured.

From Conner Mantz on Thu, Nov 03, 2011 at 19:44:13 from 24.10.142.214

I'm thinking about it. I don't think I have a great chance for a top ten position, but I'll do to get ready for the next few years.

Went for a pretty nice run with some of the people from the XC team.  Then we played a game, did some core excersices and the some more running.  I loved seeing some of those people again.  We went kinda slow for most of it, except the beast (where we sprinted) and the game.

Did a small warm up.  Then did a really fast 6.2 mile run, which I am now questioning the distance due to have faster the time was then I thought.  Then did a nice and slow mile cool down.  It felt good to finally due a good run for the first time in a week.  My calf felt great.

Ran a nice warm up.  Then went and ran a 5 mile tempo run.  I was hoping to get an average of 5:30 miles, but the average was just a bit over.  It was faster than I was thinking to go at first, but then I just felt good.  Had a nice cool down after.

I'm not sure about the distance.  I went running with the team, and the coaches gave me a schedule to start training for the footlocker.  We went on a trail run in the canyon, which was amazing.  I had to leave early, sadly.

I trained for this race really well. I went and saw a bunch of really good runners I'd met before there.   I ran the course a bit the day before, and it was a lot harder than I had inticipated.  I did a race pace run back home in Utah a week before at a 5:16 minute mile pace for four miles, so I went into this race thinking I could make the top ten or atleast get 5:06 or 5:05 minute miles.  I lined up at the start line with Jerrel Mock next to me. Mock was seated 36 and I was 34 Since we were top 10 all-state we got a spot 10 foot or so ahead of the people who weren't.  The gun went off and I since Jerrell and I aren't much of sprinters, we didn't get good spots at the first.  Jerrell got way worse than I did and I didn't see him til the end.  At first I didn't want to run into people, so I kinda let them pass.  Then later on, because my sprint at the start of a race lasts a lot longer than other peoples  I tried to gain some ground, but it's hard to do that with hundreds of people surrounding you.  I went to the outside of everyone in some weeds/farm plants, and sprinted to get ahead of them.  I probably passed 30 or 40 guys about then, but I still had a crappy spot.  At the first mile the timer read 4:58 when I crossed.  I didn't get a bad time, but I didn't get what I wanted, so on the big hill I tried harder.  I passed maybe antoher 20 guys going up it and 5 or 10 going down it.   There was another hill after that where I passed 3 people and encouraged a guy who was favorited and who usually ran a lot faster then me.  I kept running up and down the hills.  I could see Jake Heslington ahead of me.  I thought of catching up, but I didn't even try.  I then went up a hill and down a bit hill where I saw the Mt. Crest team cheering me on.  I was going way too slow at that moment and got passed by a few people.  I was running to the track, but the guy on the announcment talked and it made me jump and ruined my rythem because the giant speaker was right next to the course.  I passed a guy before I got to the track, where I started my sprint finish, and sprinted to the end.  I kept hearing people yell to the people around me, "Get up there, your close to that 24th spot."  I didn't have much an idea about it, but in the end I got passed in the last sprint, and I got 25th.  I later learned that the top 24 got medals.  Oh well, maybe next year I'll get a better start, but it was a fun race anyway.
