Running Accomplishments:

Pre-high school: I ran a lot of local 5ks and a few half marathons.  I didn't do a ton of training, but I just had fun, and I got more serious about it as high school got closer.

High school: I enjoyed running a lot, especially cross country.  I originally did track to keep my in shape for cross country.  I ran at Footlocker Nationals, the Adidas Dream mile, Brooks PR Invitational, world xc junior championships, and a few local 5ks.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Make sure I have fun, not get burned out, and get faster.

School records in the 5km and 10km.

Personal:

Served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from July 2015-July 2017.  I gained 30 lbs. during the service and came back out of shape; however I knew that if the Lord wanted me to once again run competitively, he would bless me to return to fitness.

I graduated from Sky View High School in Smithfield, Utah. I currently run for Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

AM-10 minute shakeout with Clayson and Jake.

PM-5k race in Iowa. I ran a PR by 13 seconds. 9 mile cool down, two mile warm up. Shoutout to Trevor Dunbar for pacing perfectly for 4K, and to Clayton Young for having a kid a few weeks ago, buying a car this weekend, and then running 13:34.

Race report long writeup: Got there a couple hours before the race started.  I was pretty nervous, but felt really good doing strides yesterday, so I was confident.  After the warm up when I was putting on my spikes, Coach showed me the results from the race at UW.  It put a little more pressure on my to run my goal time of 13:39, but I was confident in it.  I started next to Clayson and there was a lot of room where we started.  I quickly was in the back and while I felt the pace was slow, it wasn't.  I came around 800m at 2:10 and realized I was in good position, and right where I wanted to be.  At 1200m I was at 3:17 and debated on moving up, but we got back on pace pretty quick, and I was fine.  I think I was at 4:22 at the 1600m mark, and just kept calm. The race didn't feel too bad, but it was definately a good effort.  I hit 8:49-50 at 3200m and realized I may need to start picking it up.  With 1000m to go, I looked at the time and saw 11:00 or something and told myself I had to urn 2:39 to get sub-13:40.  I went around the pack of 8 or 9 guys quickly and was in third.  I was apprehensive to do this becasuse I knew it was going to hurt and increase the risk of me burning out, but I was pleasently surprised when it didn't.  I saw Clayton and Edwin Kurgat were gapping us and I tried to catch them.  I didn't look around me to see the pack on my heels, but focused on Clayton.  He was leading and his gap was increasing.  I just kept telling myself "Bama or bust," which is a reference to either go to indoor nationals, or blow up in this race trying.  As we continually got closer to the finish, I saw my goal of sub 13:40 getting closer and closer within reach.  With 300m to go, I was pretty sure I had it, and this sense of confidence may ahve slowed me down, as I had one of the slowest last laps in the race, but I got the goal at hte finish. I was passed by 2 people in the last 100m, but it was fine.  We had 4 guys from BYU run 13:42 or faster, with Clayton getting the win at 13:34.

Long run. Started at 0 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill making it to negative 17, but by the end it was 9 degrees and the wind chill said -9. It wasn’t as bad because we did 90% of the run not into the wind.

PM-10x1000m at intramural field.  Went off watches instead of the wheel this time, so times are a bit faster.  We went 3:02 on the first two, had a few 2:57s, then coach told Jared that he is building his base for the marathon while we were recovering from a race.  So then he dropped the hammer and we were told to make sur ewe recover and not go with him.  We had some around 2:55-59 for the next few, then our last two were 2:51s.

AM-2 mile shakeout.

PM-About 3 mile warm up, strides.

Race went well.  The start was quick and I was cut off early on by someone that tried to run across all the lanes in just half of the straightaway.   I tried to be relaxed early on.  61 through 400m and I was at the back, so that was a bit fast.  At 800m I heard 2:07, and knew that was quite a bit slower than what we needed (goal was 63 per 400m with a fast finish).  While this may have been an inaccurate 400m split, I decided to make it to the front.  I saw John Dressel behind the pacers and I quickly caught up to them and hung on behind him.  At 1200m I heard 3:08, and just thought to myself that I was in a perfect spot.  I knew Rory was behind me, and the goal was to make sure that we both got qualified, so I was in a great position.  At hte 1600m I heard 4:10 and Matt dropped off(he was one of the pacers).  I got behind Alex Ostberg, who was the other pacer, and I felt the pace going slower.  I tried to tell him to speed it up a couple times, but I don't think he heard me.  When he dropped off, I tried to start moving faster and finish strong.  I was alone up front and we were 2k in.  I felt pretty good and had prepared myself to speed up here.  That lasted about 150m, and then I realized I was in a lot of pain, and having over 800m to go was a lot.  I got passed by Brandt and just tried to hold on.  I didn't think I had slowed down when I was in the lead, but after watching the race, I had quite a bit.  At 600m to go(about the time I got passed), I felt like I was in trouble.  The pain was coming in, and I was gritting my teeth to just stay up with Brandt.  At 400m to go, Isaac yelled "'Bama or Bust!" and I just gained enough momentum to stay with him for the next 200m. When I hit 2800m I heard Coach yell "7:21," and I knew I needed to run a 30 second last 200 to qualify, but I was hurting. I just didn’t want to have this whole weekend of missing class go to waste if I bagged the last 200 and didn’t make it. I stayed close to Brandt, saw a couple Oregon runners try and pass me, sped up just enough to beat them to the line, and then crossed at 7:50 to get both a PR and a qualifier.

About 4 miles after, some with John Dressel and his teammate and then some with Rory and Carlos, as well as a run when we got back to the hotel.

PM-2 mile tempo at Intramural field.  Different GPS watches had us at different distances, so we did 4 loops and then called it.  GPS watches ranged from 9:26-46.  Felt relaxed.  Then we did 10 minutes of 30 seconds at 3k pace, 30 seconds "jog".  This was different than any workout I had run for a long time and I was a bit nervous because 3k pace is fast, and trying to run that on the grass with tight turns is painful, but it felt pretty good for the first 5 minutes and then I just took it one at a time.  We did a little over 2 miles during this time.  Cool down after.
